Lesson 1: Understanding Word
Term | Definition |

Backstage View | A screen that appears when you click the file tab in Word. Offers quick access to commands. |
Block Style | Aligns text along the left margin, including the date, inside address, salutation, body of letter, closing, and signature. |
Command | An instruction based on an action that you perform in Word by clicking a button or entering information into a command box. |
Dialog Box | Displays additional option or information you can use to execute a command. |
Dialog Box Launcher | A small arrow in the lower right corner of the group. |
Groups | Collections of related Word commands. |
I-Beam | When the insertion point changes into a large I. |
Insertion Point | Where you begin creating your text. |
Menu | A list of options associated with something. |
Mixed Punctuation | Requires a colon after the salutations and a comma after the closing. |
Nonprinting characters | Symbols for certain formatting commands. |
Open Punctuation | Requires no punctuation after the salutation or the closing. |
Preview | Shows you what your printed document will look like. |
Sends the document straight to the currently selected printer. | |
Quick Access Toolbar | Contains commands that users access most often. |
Repeat | Repeats your last action. |
Ribbon | Contains multiple commands on seperate tabs. |
Save | Opens the save as screen and saves your current document. |
Save As | Lets you save the document to a specific filename and location. |
Settings | Applies changes to the current document. |
Tabs | Contains groups. |
Template | A master document with a predefined page layout. |
Undo | Lets you cancel your last Word command or action. |
White Space | The space between pages of the document. |
Word Wrap | Automatically wraps text to the next line as it reaches the right margin. |
