Lesson 1 Understanding Word
Term | Definition |

Backstage view | File which contains commands you use for managing the Document |
Block Style | A letter format which aligns text on left margin, includes date etc. |
Command | Instructions to the computer on what to do like close, or save as command. by clicking. |
Dialog box | Gives extra tool when you are writing. |
Dialog box launcher | An arrow in the bottom right of the group, then click to launch the Dialog box |
Groups | Collection of different Word Commands |
I-beam | Place cursor near insertion point, then it changes to a large I which is called I-Beam |
Insertion point | Upper left corner of document, blinking, where you begin creating your text |
Menu | A drop down list of options |
Mixed punctuation | style used in business documents, includes colon after salutation and a comma after the closing |
Non printing characters | A number that represents a non- written or non printable character. (letter number, or symbol) |
Open punctuation | Using few exclamation marks when writing, no punctuation |
Preview | visually check your document for errors |

Quick access tool bar | A customizable toolbar that contains a set of commands |
Repeat | to do something again |
Ribbon | set of toolbars at the top of window in office programs to help you quickly find the commands to complete a task |
Save | stores document to original folder |
Save as | creates copy of document |
Settings | software control panel that enables someone to configure the appearance or actions in an application |
Tabs | part of computer window allow to go to different parts of a program |
Template | file serves as a starting point for a new document |
Undo | erases last thing you did |
White space | series of characters that represent horizontal or vertical space in typography |
Word Wrap | moves text from one line to the next |
