nutrients | substance that provides nourishment essential for growth and the maintenance of life |
enzymes | substance produced by a living organism which acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction. |
peristalsis | the involuntary constriction and relaxation of the muscles of the intestine or another canal, creating wave like movements that push the contents of the canal foward. |
esophagus | tube connecting the throat with the stomach, pathway where food passes through after swallowing. |
saliva | liquid secreted into the mouth by glands, providing lubrication for swallowing and chewing. |
liver | large lobed glandular organ in the abdomen of vertebrates, involved in many metabolic processes. |
pancreas | large gland behind the stomach which secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenem. |
digestion | the process of breaking down food my mechanical and enzymatic action in the alimentary canal into substances that can be used in the body. |
feces | waste matter discharged from the bowels after food has been digested. |
bolus | a small rounded mass of substance, especially of chewed food at the moment of swallowing. |
chyme | the pulpy acidic fluid which passes from the stomach to the small intestine. (gastric juices and partly digested food) |
villi | increasing the surface area the intestine has for absorption. |
