Health Related Fitness terms correlate to one's overall health & fitness
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Cardiovascular Fitness | The ability to exercise the whole body for long periods of time because the heart and lungs are giving the body oxygen. Examples: distance running, cross country skiing |
Muscular Strength | The most work muscles can do at any given time. How much force or how much weight you can lift. Example: bench press 250 lbs. |
Muscular Endurance | The ability to use muscles many times without getting tired. Example: carrying around a baby all day |
Flexibility | The ability to use your joints in a full range of motion. Example: touching your toes or yoga |
Body Fatness | The percentage of the body that is fat. |
Body Composition | The relationship of body fat and fat free mass (muscle, bones, etc . . .) in the body. |
Bone Density | The concentration of the bone's tissue made up primarily of calcium. |
Agility | The ability to change the position of the body quickly and accurately. Examples: moving quickly in soccer, wrestling, or dodgeball |
Balance | The ability to maintain stability (staying upright) while stationary or moving. Example: surfing, skateboarding |
Coordination | The ability to use your senses with a body part or repeatedly execute a sequence of movements smoothly and accurately. Examples: juggling |
Power | The ability to transfer energy into force at a fast rate (strength +speed). Example: throwing a shot put or football |
Reaction Time | The time between one of the senses recognizing a stimulus and the body moving in reponse. Examples: starting a race or brakes on a car |
Speed | The ability to perform a movement in a short period of time. Examples: running fast, throwing a fast ball |
