1.02 Graphic Design Features Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Graphic Illustrations and photographs used to convey meaning and appeal
Bleed A print effect in which a color or an object appears to run off the edge of a page
Caption A brief descriptive text, usually placed near an image
Dropped Cap An enlarged character at the beginning of a paragraph
Pull Quote A quotation taken directly from the body of the article
Sidebar Smaller, self-contained story alongside a larger story
End Mark A symbol used to indicate the end of the article or news term
Nameplate the banner on front of a document
Main Heading title of the article, usually in a larger font
Subheading subtitles, set in a smaller font
Byline gives credit to the author or contributor of photo and the article
Kicker words positioned above a headline, usually as a lead or teaser
Deck placed between a headline and an article to provide a surge between the headline and the body of an article
Body the bulk of the publication
Jumpline tells reader what page to refer to for the continuation of an article
Running Header/Footer running test at the top/bottom of a document
