Chief Executive holds the executives power to run government programs and implement laws that are passed by congress
Commander in Chief serves as commander of the nations military forces
Foreign Policy a nations plans and procedures for dealing with other countries
Diplomacy the art of negotiating with foreign governments
Chief of State takes on the role of the symbolic figure head of the United States
Succession the process of succeeding, or coming after someone
Executive Orders formal, signed statements from the president that instruct or guide executive officials and have the force of law
Executive Privilege the power that allows a president to refuse to release information to congress or a court
Diplomatic Recognition the presidential power to formally recognize the legitimacy of a foreign government
Reprieve postpones the carrying out of a sentence, or the length of time a person is put in jail
Pardon releases a convicted criminal from having to fulfill a sentence
Amnesty grants a group of offenders a general pardon for offenses commited
Commute to reduce a persons sentence
Doctrine of Nullification the beliefe that the states had the right to cancel federal laws with which they disagreed
Doctrine of Secession the idea that a state had the right to seperate from the union
Cooperative Federalism an area of federalism during which the national and state governmet shared functional authority in broad policy areas
Creative Federalism the period in which the national government channeled federal funds to local governments and citizen groups to address problems that states could or would not address
New Federalism mdern era in federalism in which authority that rested with the national government is being returned to the states
Devolution the modern trend in federalism in which more power is given back to the states
Administration the group of people who work for the executive branch under the president
Executive Office of the President consists of a number of seperate offices that help the president formulate policy
White House Office consists of the presidents key personal and political staff
Chief of Staff the official who manages the every day operations of the white house office or who may serve as the primary presidential adviser who controls all access to the president and helps map the political strategy
National Security Council brings together the top military, foreign affairs, and intelligence officials in the administration to coordinate U.S national security policy
Council of Economic Advisers the group of advisers charged with providing the president with expert analysis of the economy and also asisting in forming economic policy
Office of Management and Budget the purpose of the OMB is to help develop the federal budget and to oversee its execution by the agencies in the executive branch. Employs more than 500 people
Executive Departments agencies of the federal government responsible for carrying out laws, administering programs, and making regulations in their particular area of responsibility
Official Roles of the President -chief executive -chief administrator -commander in chief -foreign policy leader -chief agenda setter
Unofficial Roles of the President -chief of state -party leader -chief citizen
Formal qualification for presidency -be at least 35 years old -have lived in the country for 14 years -be a natural born U.S citizen
How many terms can the president serve? two four year terms
What is the presidents main legislative power? the veto
How can congress override a veto? if two-thirds of the members of each house vote to do so
What branches can check the the powers of the presidency? -legislative branch -judicial branch
Who manages the White House office? chief of staff
What is the size of todays cabinet? 16 official cabinet positions, including the vice president
