Diplomacy | the art of negotiating with foreign governments |
Chief of State | takes on the role of the symbolic figure head of the United States |
Succession | the process of succeeding, or coming after someone |
Executive Orders | formal, signed statements from the president that instruct or guide executive officials and have the force of law |
Executive Privilege | the power that allows a president to refuse to release information to congress or a court |
Diplomatic Recognition | the presidential power to formally recognize the legitimacy of a foreign government |
Reprieve | postpones the carrying out of a sentence, or the length of time a person is put in jail |
Pardon | releases a convicted criminal from having to fulfill a sentence |
Amnesty | grants a group of offenders a general pardon for offenses commited |
Commute | to reduce a persons sentence |
Doctrine of Nullification | the beliefe that the states had the right to cancel federal laws with which they disagreed |
Doctrine of Secession | the idea that a state had the right to seperate from the union |
Cooperative Federalism | an area of federalism during which the national and state governmet shared functional authority in broad policy areas |
Creative Federalism | the period in which the national government channeled federal funds to local governments and citizen groups to address problems that states could or would not address |
New Federalism | mdern era in federalism in which authority that rested with the national government is being returned to the states |
Devolution | the modern trend in federalism in which more power is given back to the states |
Administration | the group of people who work for the executive branch under the president |
Executive Office of the President | consists of a number of seperate offices that help the president formulate policy |
White House Office | consists of the presidents key personal and political staff |
Chief of Staff | the official who manages the every day operations of the white house office or who may serve as the primary presidential adviser who controls all access to the president and helps map the political strategy |
National Security Council | brings together the top military, foreign affairs, and intelligence officials in the administration to coordinate U.S national security policy |
Council of Economic Advisers | the group of advisers charged with providing the president with expert analysis of the economy and also asisting in forming economic policy |
Office of Management and Budget | the purpose of the OMB is to help develop the federal budget and to oversee its execution by the agencies in the executive branch. Employs more than 500 people |
