Criminal Key Terms

Aggravated Assault | Inflicts very serious injury upon a person or when someone uses a deadly weapon that has potential to kill |
Arson | To purposefully set something on fire and have it burn, typically on buildings or structures |
Battery | The harmful touching of another person |
Burglary | A person who breaks and enters into a building with the intent on stealing stuff |
Contempt of Court | When a person ignores a court order or just isn't respecting the court |
Criminal Act | Act that is punishable offense against society |
Criminal Intent | When you have intent to commit a crime |
Duty | The obligation to use a reasonable standard of care to prevent the injuries that could happen to somebody else |
Embezzlement | To take money away with something and to convert it to use for the people's own usage |
Felony | a crime punishment that can lead to over a year in a state prison or a fine by $1,000+ |
Forgery | When you place a false signature on a check or anything else really in order to use that for your personal gain |
Fraud | When a person or a business uses some deception to obtain some money or property |
Interaction | It's when civil crimes are then placed as criminal fines |
Kidnapping | Unlawful removal of somebody, just like taking somebody |
Larceny | When the stealing of property is not valued at more then $1,000 |
Manslaughter | When you kill somebody but you didn't mean to |
Misdemeanor | A less serious crime that is mainly punishable by a local jail for less than a year, or a small fine or both |
Money Laundering | When illegal money is put through a business to make it seem legal |
Murder | Intentionally killing another person |
Obstruction of Justice | When a person hinders the court |
Perjury | When a person lies under oath |
Rape | Happens when a victim is unconscious and has sexual acts performed against them |
Robbery | More serious Larceny |
Simple Assault | Attempt to commit battery |
Statutory Rape | When the defendent engages in rape when someone is younger, and they are 6 years older |
Treason | Giving aid to an enemy of the US |
Vandalism | Malicious damage to property |
Violation of Duty | When you violate the terms of a duty |
