Bicameral (of a legislative body) having two branches or chambers.
Republic a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.
Ordinance a piece of legislation enacted by a municipal authority.
Depreciate diminish in value over a period of time.
Depression a long and severe recession in an economy or market.
Manumission release from slavery.
Proportional corresponding in size or amount to something else.
Compromise an agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions.
Federalism the federal principle or system of government.
Legislative Branch the branch of the government that writes, debates, and passes laws. Making laws can be called legislating.
Executive Branch The executive branch's main responsibility is applying and enforcing the laws passed by Congress, which is the legislative branch of the U.S. government.
Electoral College (in the US) a body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president.
Judicial Branch The judicial branch of the U.S. government makes decisions — interpretations — of laws.
Check and Balances counterbalancing influences by which an organization or system is regulated, typically those ensuring that political power is not concentrated in the hands of individuals or groups.
Amendment a minor change or addition designed to improve a text, piece of legislation, etc.
