Pythagorean Theorem
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Legs of a triangle | The 2 shorter sides of a right triangle. ( a and b ) |
Hypotenuse | The longest side of a right triangle. ( side c ) |
Right triangle | A triangle with one angle measuring 90 degrees. |
Pythagorean Theorem | a² + b² = c² leg² + leg² = hypotenuse² |
Pythagorean triple | When the sum of the legs² = the hypotenuse² then it is a triplet. Ex. 3² + 4² = 5²... MUST be POSITIVE INTEGERS. |
Square root | The number is a value that, when multiplied by itself, gives this number. |
Perfect squares | When the same 2 number (factors) equals the radicand. √9 = 3 √64 = 8 |
Converse of the Pythagorean Theorem | IF a² + b² = c², THEN it is a right triangle. IF the squares of one side = the sum of the squares of the other 2 sides THEN it is a right triangle |
Pythagoras | Greek philosopher that the Pythagorean theorem is named after. |
Proof | A way to demonstrate that a statement is verifiably true or false. |
