Alg2 Poly Functions

Polynomial Functions Terms to Know

TermDefinition
Leading Coefficient The coefficient of the first term of a polynomial in standard form.
Constant or constant term A term in a function or expression that does not contain a variable.
Factor A number or expression that divides into a number or expression evenly (remainder of zero)
Standard Form of a Polynomial When a polynomial is written so the terms are in order from greatest degree to least degree.
Perfect Square A number whose positive square root is a whole number.
End Behavior The trends in the y-values of a functions as the x-values approach positive and negative infinity. Where the graph is going up and down as the x-values go to positive and negative infinity.
Monomial A number or product of numbers and variables with whole-number exponents.
Multiplicity When a factor (x -r) appears more than once when a polynomial is factored it is said to have a multiplicity of the number of times it appears.
Polynomial A monomial or the sum or difference of monomials.
Polynomial Function A function made up of the sum or difference of monomials.
Synthetic Division A shorter method of dividing a polynomial by a binomial (x - a) using only the coefficients of the polynomial.
Turning Point A point on the graph that is a local maximum or minimum. It is where the graph will change directions (from increasing to decreasing or decreasing to increasing).
Discriminant b^2 - 4ac

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
