Unit 8: Algebraic Reasoning

TermDefinition
dependent quantity a value that represents the output or effect; a quantity that depends on another quantity for its value, y-value
independent quantity a value that represents the input or cause; x-value
additive relationship the quantities are expressed through addition; y = x + a
multiplicative relationship the quantities are expressed through multiplication; y = kx
axis/axes horizontal and vertical reference lines that define the coordinate plane
coordinate a specific location on the coordinate plane written as an ordered pair
coordinate plane a plane containing two perpendicular axes (x and y) intersecting at a point called the origin (0, 0); also referred to as the coordinate grid
ordered pair a pair of numbers used to locate a point on a coordinate plane; the first number is the horizontal or x position; the second number is the vertical or y position
origin the point where we begin; the point of intersection of the x and y axis on a coordinate plane; (0, 0)
quadrant I the top right section of the coordinate plane; both x and y values are positive (+, +)
x-axis the horizontal axis of a graph or Cartesian coordinate plane
y-axis the vertical axis of a graph or Cartesian coordinate plane
quadrant II the top left section of the coordinate plane; x values are negative, y values are positive (-, +)
quadrant III the bottom left section of the coordinate plane; both x and y values are negative (-, -)
quadrant IV the bottom right section of the coordinate plane; x values are positive, y values are negative (+, -)
variable mystery number; a letter or symbol representing a varying quantity, for example, n in 10 + n.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.
