Unit 8-9 Vocabulary
Geometry and Measurement, Coordinate Plane
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Acute angle | Angle that measures less than 90 degrees |
Obtuse angle | An angle that measures more than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees |
Right angle | angle (formed by two perpendicular lines) that measures 90 degrees |
Area | the measurement that describes the number of square units a figure or region covers |
Volume | the measurement attribute of the amount of space occupied by matter |
Perimeter | linear measurement of the distance around the outer edge of a figure |
Congruent | of equal measure, same size, same shape |
Conversion | Changing one measurement unit to another measurement unit without changing the amount |
Polygon | a closed figure with at least 3 sides, where all sides are straight |
Regular Polygon | A polygon with all sides and all angles congruent |
Irregular Polygon | A polygon with sides and angles that are NOT all congruent |
Two-dimensional figure | a figure with two basic units of measure, length and width |
Three-dimensional figure | a figure that has measurements including length, width (depth), and height |
Vertex (vertices) | the point or corner where two sides meet |
origin | (0,0) |
ordered pair | give a location of a point on a graph (x,y) |
x-axis | horizontal number line on a coordinate plane |
y-axis | vertical number line on a coordinate plane |
perpendicular | two lines that intersect at a right angle |
parallel | two lines that never instersect |
number line | a model that lists numbers in order with the same interval |
intersect | where two lines cross |
Quadrilateral | a polygon with exactly 4 sides and 4 angles |
trapezoid | a quadrilateral that must have exactly one pair of parallel sides |
parallelogram | a quadrilateral that must have exactly 2 pair of parallel sides |
isosceles | a triangle with 2 congruent sides |
scalene | a triangle with no congruent sides |
equilateral | a triangle with all sides congruent |
symmetry | when two or more parts are identical |
