Antiemetics, Phenothiazines, and Phenothiazide-like drugs: | Prochloperazine (Compazine) Action: Block dopamine receptors in the brain.Use: Severe nausea and vomiting.Also works good for migranes.AE: Dose related anticholinergic side effects: dry mouth, sedation, constipation, orthostatic htn, tachycardia. |
Phenergan: (Promethizine) | Action:Alters effects of dopamine in CNS and has inhinbitory effects on the chemoreceptor trigger zone in the medulla.Use:Relief from nausea,vomiting,motion sickness,and allergic symptoms.SE: neuroleptic malignant synd, confusion, disorient, sedation. |
Zofran: (Omdansetron) | Aciton: blocks effects of seratonin at 5-HT 3-receptor sites located in vagal nerve terminals. CTZ in CNS.Use: Prevention of nausea and vomiting assoc. w/ chemo therapy and radiation therapy.SE: Headache, constipation, dirrhea |
