TRACHEOSTOMY artificial opening created in the trachea
RHINOPLASTY reconstructive surgery of the nose
RHINITIS inflammation of the nose
RHINOPNEUMONITIS inflammation of the nose and the lungs
PNEUMOTHORAX free air in the pleural cavity
HEMOTHORAX blood in the pleural cavity
PYOTHORAX pus in the pleural cavity
ATELECTASIS collapsed lung(s)
TACHYPNEA rapid breathing
BRADYPNEA slow breathing
HYPERPNEA excessive breathing
DYSPNEA difficulty breathing
APNEA absence of breathing
HYPERCAPNIA a condition of excessive CO2
HYPOXIA a condition of deficient O2
ALVEOLAR alveoli
SINUSITIS inflammation of the sinus
INTERCOSTAL between the ribs

INSPIRATION the act of breathing in
EXPIRATION the act of breathing out
ASPIRATION inspiration of foreign materials into the lungs
CYANOSIS blue coloration of mucous membranes
HEMOPTYSIS coughing up blood
ANTITUSSIVE an agent used to suppress coughing
EPIGLOTTIS the cartilaginous flap that covers the opening to the glottis
INTRANASAL within the nose
ACHONDRAL pertaining to no cartilage
NASOPHARYNX the nose and throat
NASOGASTRIC the nose and stomach
BRONCHIECTASIS dilation of bronchi
BRONCHIARCTIA a condition of bronchial constriction
THORACENTESIS procedure in which the chest is punctured for the removal of fluid or air
HYDROTHORAX fluid accumulates in the pleural cavity
THORACOTOMY a surgical incision of the chest wall
PHRENIC diaphragm
OROPHARYNX the mouth and throat
LOBECTOMY to cut out a lobe from the Lung
TRANSTRACHEAL passage of something through / across the tracheal wall
BRONCHOSPASM spasmodic contraction of bronchial or bronchiolar muscle
LARYNGOPLASTY reconstructive surgery of the larynx
CAPNOGRAPHY recording CO2
OXYMETRY measuring O2
ORTHOPNEA extreme form of dyspnea
HYPOVENTILATION a decreased volume of air exchanged each breathing cycle
