GA studies ch.13

QuestionAnswer
The Self-government the states lived under is called a... Confederation
For much of the American Revolution, the government of the United States had been the... Second Continental Congress
The experimental government of the time was outlined in a document called.... The Articles of Confederation
This system of government had no executive or judicial branches, and was unicameral. The Articles of Confederation
To make an amendment to the Articles of Confederation, what was the ratio of agreement that the states had to reach? 9/9... Everyone had to agree *big mistake, bc it was very hard to find situations where everyone agreed*
____ was still the main concern of most GA citizens. Land! remember, its an agriculture state.
This group of people was driven out of GA after the Revolutionary War. A major problem arose from this because they didn't know what to do with the new land. LOYALISTS! They were driven out because the Patriots won the war. There was controversy over the land because much of it was left untended (and much of it was valuable $$$)
Did any Loyalists regain citizenship in Georgia? Yes. But only a few. Many did not, and had to make formal requests to return(which could be dismissed or ignored). The most active and prominent Loyalists were denied any chance of return to their land and the colony.
What happened to the land that was left unoccupied after the Loyalists were driven out? Whatever land that was not returned to the owner was confiscated by the state. Georgia was hopeful that the land could bring in profit to ease some of her war debt.
This system granted land based on rank in the army. Bounty Grant! EXAMPLE: Colonel Elijah Clarke received several thousand acres $$
This system stated that the "head" of the family had the "right" to receive 200 acres of land plus and extra 50 for every additional household member. The headright system! Had issues though, because there were too many claims/grants and not enough land (oops)
How long did Augusta serve as Georgia's capital? 10 years. Augusta served as a temporary capital while Louisville was being built.
What was the Proclamation of 1763? Settled disputes by ordering colonists that had settled west of the Appalachian Mtn.s to move eastward.
What happened at the meeting in Long Swamp in 1782? The Cherokee agreed to give up land west of the Savannah River, and land south and west of the Tugalo River. There were many meetings such as these between the Indians and the Georgians because Georgia deeply desired to gain more land without conflict.
This leader claimed that since he and his section of the Creek Indians had not agreed to the treaties, that made them illegal. Alexander McGillivray. He was a half Creek, half Scottish leader of the Indian people group.
After the Revolutionary war, this person attempted to bring all the Creek Indians together to form a strong nation. He had deep ties with the Indians and was accepted into a position of great status within the group. Alexander McGillivray
