ANEMIA a deficiency of erythrocytes and/or hemoglobin
PANCYTOPENIA a deficiency of all blood cells
LEUKOCYTE White Blood Cells
LEUKOPENIA a deficiency of WBC
LEUKOCYTOSIS increased numbers of WBC
NEUTROPENIA decreased numbers of neutrophilic leukocytes in the blood
BASOPHILIC things that stain readily with basic / blue dyes (blue affinity)
EOSINOPHILIA increased numbers of eosinophilic leukocytes in the blood (red affinity)
LYMPHOCYTOSIS increased numbers of lymphocytic leukocytes in the blood
MONOCYTOSIS increased numbers of monocytic leukocytes in the blood
POLYMORPHONUCLEAR multi-shaped nucleus
THROMBOCYTE Blood platelets
HEMOSTASIS the process of blood clotting
THROMBUS a clot
PHAGOCYTE leukocytes that ingest foreign organisms and particles
MACROPHAGE phagocytic leukocytes found wandering outside of the bloodstream, in the tissues of the body
ANTICOAGULANT any chemical agent that prevents clotting of blood
HEMOLYSIS the process of destroying blood
HEMORRHAGE blood escaping / bleeding
HEMATOMA a localized accumulation of blood between tissues / tissue layers, due to a break in a blood vessel
HEMATOCRIT to separate blood
MEGAKAROCYTE a cell found in the bone marrow that contains a very large nucleus and from which platelets are formed
POIKILOCYTOSIS a condition of varied / irregular cells
HYPOPROTEINEMIA a condition of deficient protein of the blood
LIPEMIA an excess of lipids in the blood, giving a milky appearance to the blood and plasma
LEUKEMIA malignancy of the blood-forming tissues, resulting in excessive numbers of abnormal leukocytes in the blood
BILIRUBINEMIA a condition of bilirubin blood (bile pigment produced by the breakdown of hemoglobin in erythrocytes)
ICTERIC jaundice
RUBRIBLAST youngest from of erythrocytes, found only in the bone marrow
PRORUBRICYTE the next stage of red cell development after the rubriblast
RUBRICYTE a young erythrocyte
METARUBRICYTE a young erythrocyte that is about to discharge its nucleus
MYELOCYTE immature leukocytes that are generally found only in the bone marrow
METAMYELOCYTE an immature neutrophil that may be seen in peripheral blood in a patient with overwhelming disease
PROTHROMBIN refers to Clotting Factor II, which is a precursor to thrombin in the clotting cascade
FIBRINOGEN refers to Clotting Factor I, which is the precursor to fibrin
SPHEROCYTE a ball cell ; an erythrocyte that is round rather than discoid
STOMATOCYTE a poikilocytic erythrocyte that appears to have a "smiley face" centrally in the cell
KERATOCYTE a poikilocytic erythrocyte that appears to have horns
ECHINOCYTE a poikilocytic erythrocyte that appears spiny like a hedgehog
ACANTHOCYTE a poikilocytic erythrocyte that has multiple irregularly placed prejections
SCHIZOCYTE a poikilocytic erythrocyte that has been torn into fragments
MYELODYSPLASIA a condition of marrow malformation / poor development
HEMATOPOIESIS blood cell formation
ERYTHROPOETIN stimulates the bone marrow to produce erythrocytes
