Totalitarianism | a government where the ruler or ruling group has complete control. (TOTAL) |
Fascism | a form of government that is a type of one-party dictatorship. They work for a totalitarian one-party state; puts nation and often race above the individual. |
Axis Powers | The fascist alliance between mainly Germany, Italy,and Japan, during World War II, against the Allies. |
Allied Powers | The powers were Great Britain, The United States, China, and the Soviet Union. |
Appeasement | Britain's policy in the 1930s of allowing Hitler to expand German territory unchecked |
How did Appeasement fail during WWII? | it failed to prevent war. . it was a short term fix when it was made clear that the Policy would not stop Hitler and war was inevitable. |
Blitzkrieg | a method of offensive warfare designed to strike a swift, focused blow at an enemy using mobile, maneuverable forces, including armored tanks and air support. |
Luftwaffe | German term for an air force |
Tuskegee Airman | a group of African-American and Caribbean-born military pilots (fighter and bomber) who fought in World War II |
Internment | putting a person in prison or other kind of detention, generally in wartime. Ex. US put Japanese in camps because US thought that they were loyal to Japan. |
D-Day | the invasion of Normandy. Allied forces attacked the German forces. It was a turning point in the war. |
Bataan Death March | the Japanese forced 76,000 captured Allied soldiers (Filipinos and Americans) to march about 80 miles across the Bataan Peninsula. |
Island Hopping | taking over an island and establishing a military base there. The base was in turn used as a launching point for the attack and takeover of another island. |

Kamikaze | a Japanese aircraft loaded with explosives and making a deliberate suicidal crash on an enemy target. |
Holocaust | Hitler’s “final solution” |
Kristallnacht | Nazis in Germany torched synagogues, vandalized Jewish homes, schools |
Genocide | violence against members of a national, ethnic, racial or religious group with the intent to destroy the entire group. |
Manhattan Project | United States to develop the first nuclear weapon. |
Enola Gay | the U.S. bomber that dropped atomic bombs on Japan |
