Question | Answer |
---|---|
Follicular development in the ovary occurs during which stage of the estrous cycle? | Proestrus |
The heat period, or the period of sexual receptivity in the female occurs during which stage of the estrous cycle? | Estrus |
What animals are considered induced ovulators? | Camels, cats, ferrets, and rabbits. |
In most species, when does ovulation occur? | Near the end of the estrus stage of the estrous cycle. |
What are the stage of the estrous cycle? | Proestrus, estrus, metestrus, and diestrus. Anestrus occurs in some animals between breeding seasons. |
In induced ovulators, when does ovulation occur? | Ovulation does not occur until the animal is bred. |
The corpus luteum develops during which stage of the estrous cycle? | Metestrus |
What hormone does the corpus luteum produce during the metestrus stage of the estrous cycle? | Progesterone |
What does progesterone do? | Temporarily inhibits follicular development in the ovary. Causes the lining of the uterus to become thickened and moist Causes loss of the cornified epithelial lining that developed in the vagina during proestrus and estrus. |
What hormone reaches its peak during estrus? | Estrogen |
What happens during proestrus? | As the follicles increase in size, they began to release more estrogen causing thickening of the linings of the oviduct, uterus, and vagina. The epithelial lining of the vagina begins cornification. |
In what two species is there a little distinction between the metestrus and diestrus stages? | In the cat and dog. |
What stage of the estrous cycle is considered the active luteal stage, when the corpus luteum has reached maximum size and exerts its maximum effect? | Diestrus |
What happens to the corpus luteum if an animal becomes pregnant? | The corpus luteum receives an endocrine signal from the developing embryo and is retained. |
What happens to the corpus luteum if an animal does not become pregnant? | The corpus luteum degenerates at the end of diestrus. |
What happens to the animal after diestrus during the estrous cycle? | Depending on the species, the animal either goes back to proestrus or the ovary shuts down and the animal goes back into anestrus. |
What is Psudocyesis? | Pseudopregnancy |
What stage of the estrous cycle is considered the period of temporary ovarian inactivity seen in seasonal polyestrous, diestrous, and monoestrous animals? | Anestrus |
What is the anestrus stage of the estrous cycle? | The period between breeding cycles, when the ovary essentially shuts down temporarily. |
Animals with which estrous cycle intervals experience anestrus? | Seasonal polyestrous, diestrous, and monoestrous animals. |
Polyestrous | Cycle continuously throughout the year if they are not pregnant. As soon as one cycle ends, another begins. |
Polyestrous species | Cattle and swine. |
Seasonally polyestrous | Cycle continuously at certain times of the year and not at all at others. |
Seasonally polyestrous species | Horses, sheep, and cats. |
Diestrous | Have two cycles per year, usually in the spring and fall. |
Diestrous species | Dogs |
Monoestrous | have only one cycle each year |
Monoestrous species | Foxes and minks |
