TermDefinition
Bond Rating Measures the financial community's faith in an issuer's financial stability.
Income Tax Percentage of what people earn; aid to the government
Initiative Procedure for proposing and enacting state or local laws.
State fees Charged to people who use a particular service, such as highways or state parks
State supreme courts Highest state courts of appeals.
Referendum Popular vote on a proposal that has already been considered by the legislature.
Sales tax Made on the sale of a service or good and charged as a percentage of the sales price.
Special courts Organized at county or city level and focus on particular areas, such as probate or traffic violations.
Recall Special election to remove an elected official from office before the end of his or her term.
Sin taxes Intended to discourage purchase of certain types of goods, such as liquor/cigarettes.
Jury pool Group of people who might be chosen to serve in a trial
State legislative committees Evaluate and report on proposed
Governor Elected chief executive of a state
State district attorney Investigates and prosecutes criminal cases
Severance taxes Placed on the extraction of nonrenewable resources, such as oil and coal.
