Agammaglobulinemic Without immunoglobulins.
Body Condition score Method of subjectively quantifying subcutaneous body fat reserves.
Boluses Large tablets.
Byproducts feeds Residues of the feed-processing industry; are found in a wide array of feedstuffs.
Chain twitch Flat chain loop attached to the end of a stout wooden handle to form a loop.
Colostrometer A tool that measures the specific gravity of colostrum.
Commissure A site of union of corresponding parts, such as the angle of the lips.
Concentrates Feeds that are low in fiber and high in energy and/or protein.
Cross tying Another way to secure a horse's head and to keep it from rearing.
Crutched This procedure removes the wool from around the vulva and the udder, done to ewes close to parturition.
Decubital ulcers Pressure sores exacerbated by recumbency, increased skin moisture, and irritation; pressure sores (bed sores) that result from an animal lying on a bony prominence for too long.
Diastema A gap in the dental arcade, as seen between the incisors and check teeth of some species.
Drenching Giving small volumes of liquids PO
Ensiling Harvesting process by which forage is chopped and placed into a storage unit (e.g., silo) that excludes oxygen
Farrowing Is a term specific to swine that refers to the action of giving birth.
Feed analysis Procedure by which chemical analysis determines the proportion of specific components of a feedstuff,
Feedstuff Any dietary component that provides some essential nutrient or serves some other function.
Forages Feeds made up of most or all of the plant.
Frick's speculum May be used to give two or more boluses to cattle. Is a piece of veterinary equipment for use in cattle. It is a hollow metal cylinder with ferruled ends.
Gestation Pregnancy length; is the period of development during the carrying of an embryo or fetus inside.
Gilts Young female porcine before farrowing.
Hay Forage that is cut and allowed to dry before being collected into bales for storage.
Hog snare A mechanical restraint device consisting of a metal pipe with a cable loop on one end.
Humane twitch Is a metal clamplike device that pinches the upper lip between two bars,
Laminitis Inflammation of the hoof lamina, a cause of lameness; also called founder.
Needle teeth The newborn piglet has eight very sharp canine teeth; also referred to as wolf.
Nonnutritive feed additives Buffers, hormones, binders, and medications added to feeds.
Orosgastric administration Also called "stomach tubing" is a quick and relatively painless method to deliver large quantities of liquid medication or fluids.
Perivascular Pertaining to around a blood vessel.
Proximate analysis Determination of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE, crude fat), crude fiber (CF), and ash.
Silage A partially fermented forage state.
Spoilage The forage harvested at a given stage of development and fed directly to an animal.
Squeeze chute A capture device made of metal or wood that restrains cattle.
Thrush A degenerative condition common in feet that are infrequently cleaned, or if the horse stands for long periods in damp bedding or muddy soil.
Wether Castrated male ovines/caprines.
Withdrawal time The minimum length of time that must pass from the last administration of medicine until the time that the animal is slaughtered for food or the milk is collected for human consumption.
