TermDefinition
Modacrylic wigs Wigs made of synthetic fibers and are the most cost effective.
animal hair wigs Wigs made of yak, angora, horse, camel and sheep hair.
Remy hair Highest grade of human hair.
J and L Color Ring- Standard hair color ring used by wig and hairpiece manufacturers; contains numbered samples of hair colors from black to palest blonde.
Cap wigs Type of wig consisting of an elasticized mesh-fiber base to which the hair fiber is attached.
Capless wigs Type of wig consisting of rows of hair wefts sewn to strips of elastic.
hand-tied wigs Produced by actually hand-tying strands of hair into a fine meshwork foundation.
machine-made wigs Consists of hair fiber sewn into long strips called wefts, which are then sewn to the cap of the sign in a circular crisscross pattern.
semi-hand-tied wigs Combination of hand-tied and machine-made wig.
Circumference Measurement of the head that begins at the middle of the front hairline and circles the entire head.
wig block Canvas-covered head form that holds wig while services are being performed.
Dart Alteration made vertically to remove width in the nape area ( from ear to ear) of a wig.
Tucks Alterations made horizontally to shorten a wig from the front to the nape.
chin strap Holds wig in place on client’s head during services.
Hairpiece Consist of a man-mase base with attached hair or fiber.
hair addition Loose hair fibers or wefts designed to be attached to the base of the client’s own hair.
Cascade Hairpiece worn to create bulk or special effects; consists of long hair fiber attached to an oblong-shaped dome base.
Chignon Fairly long segment of lopped hair, pre-formed into a specific shape and worn at the crown or at the nape.
Fall Hairpiece with longer lengths attached to a base that covers the crown, occipital and nape areas.
Toupee Hairpiece designed to be worn on top of the head to cover bald or thinning hair.
Wiglet Hairpiece usually worn to create fullness or height at the top or crown area of the head; consists of hair fiber usually 6” or less in length attached to a round, flat base.
Integration Addition with an opening in the base that allows the client’s hair to be pulled through for blending purposes.
Adhesives Tape or bonding products that are applied directly to the scalp
Wig cap Holds client’s hair in place and keeps it flat.
wig pins Supply used to hold wigs and hairpieces in place on canvas block during designing, cleaning and maintenance services.
canvas block Canvas-covered head form that holds wig while services are being performed.
Hackle A metal plate with rows of pointed needles used to blend or straighten fiber/hair during a hair addition service.
drawing board A flat mat used to hold hair extension fibers during a hair addition service.
