Probability

Vocabulary practice

experiment is a situation involving chance which leads to a set of results
outcome is a possible result of the experiment, like rolling a 5 or a coin showing heads
equally likely if outcomes have the same chance of occurring
trial is a process which can be repeated to produce results like flipping a coin, rolling a die or spinning a spinner
event is either a single outcome (e.g. rolling a 3 ) or a collection of outcomes (e.g. rolling a 3, 4 or 5 )
probability of an event is a number between 0 and 1 that represents the chance that the event occurs
Impossible an event with a probability of zero
certain An event with a probability of 1
Even chance has a 50% chance or probability
Sample space is the set of possible outcomes of an experiment
Complement of some event E is written E′(or not E), E′is the event that E does not occur
Venn diagram is a pictorial representation of a two-way table without the total row and column
Two-way table lists the number of outcomes or people in different categories, with the final row and column being the total of the other entries in that row or column
union A or B
intersection A and B
inclusive A or B or both
exclusive A or B but not both
Experimental probability a situation involving chance or probability (perhaps a survey) that leads to results
