Cranial Nerve VI : Action / Testing Abducens: lateral movement of the eyes Testing: ask patient to gaze laterally
Cranial Nerve VII : Action / Testing Facial: muscles for facial expression, closing of the eyelid, taste of the anterior 2/3 portion of the tongue
Cranial Nerver VIII: Action / Testing Acoustic : hearing, balance/equilibrium Testing: PT cannot perform auditory testing but patient may be referred
Cranial Nerve IX : Action / Testing Glossopharyngeal: muscles for swallowing and phonation, taste on the posterior 1/3 of tongue, gag reflex Testing: Articulating / making sounds
Cranial Nerve X : Action / Testing Vagus: swallowing, gotteral speech sounds, and parasympathetic action of heart/lungs/stomach Testing: patient to say deep stomach sounds such as "guh, ahh." Patient will be unable to lower heightened responses from sympatheic reactions
Cranial Nerve XI : Action / Testing Accessory: shrugging of the shoulders, turning the head side to side
Cranial Nerve XII : Action / Testing Hypoglossal: motor of the tongue Testing: patient sticks their tongue out. Deviation to the right or left
