Yr 8 Probability
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Probability | The chance of an event occurring |
Impossible | Zero chance of an event occurring |
Certain | 100% chance of an event occurring |
Event | Is a result that an outcome may occur |
Outcomes | Is a particular result of a trial |
Experiment | Are performed to provide data, which then can be used to forecast outcomes in the future |
Favourable outcome | Is the outcome that we are looking for |
Relative Frequency | Is the experimental probability of it occurring |
Theoretical Probability is written as... | P(event) |
The formula for theoretical probability is written as | P(event)= number of favourable outcomes/number of possible outcomes |
Sample space is.. | Is the set of all the possible outcomes |
Sample space is written as... | S={ } |
Complementary Events | A and A' are complementary events When there is nothing in common between these events and together they form a sample space. (eg:- Head & Tails are complementary events |
The formula for Complementary events can be written as | P(A) + P(A')=1 or P(A')=1 - P(A) or P(A)=1 - (A') |
Highly Unlikely- in percentage & decimal form. | 0.1 10% |
Very Unlikely- in percentage & decimal form. | 0.2 20% |
Unlikely- in percentage & decimal form. | 0.3 30% |
Less than even chance- in percentage & decimal form. | 0.4 40% |
Even chance- in percentage & decimal form. | 0.5 50% |
Better than even chance- in percentage & decimal form. | 0.6 60% |
Likely- in percentage & decimal form. | 0.7 70% |
Very Likely- in percentage & decimal form. | 0.8 80% |
Highly Likely- in percentage & decimal form. | 0.9 90% |
Experimental Probability formula is written as | Number of times the event occurs/Total number of trials |
