Algebra Terms

TermDefinition
Sequence a number pattern.
Term Each number in a sequence.
Rule or Formula Describes the pattern in a sequence.
Input The number you start with.
Output The number you finish with or the answer.
Pronumeral (variable) Is written in lower case letters.
Multiplying pronumerals (variables) You don't write the times sign & the number is written in front of the pronumeral Eg: h = k x 5 is written as h=5k
Substitution The pronumerals is replaced by a number. Giving a pronumeral a value.
Coefficient The number in front of a pronumeral.
Expressions Made up of pronumerals & numbers. Does NOT have an equal sign.
Equations Does Have an equal sign.
Constant Contains only a number
Like Terms Has exactly the same pronumerals. Eg: 10a & 3a or 8egh & ghe Must be raised to the same power. You can only add or subtract like terms
Unlike Terms Have different pronumerals Eg: abc & 7bc or 4c & 4k Or raised to a different power
Distributive Law Expanding the brackets Each term inside the brackets is multiplied with the term directly outside the bracket
Evaluate Substitute a number for each pronumeral in the expression and then work out the value.
