Describe the four primary functional areas of a firm. Finance: secures and allocates resources, Human Resources: secures and allocates labor, Marketing: creates demand, Operations: satisfies demand
How is operations related to marketing? Marketing provides sales forecasts to operation and operations provides marketing with product availability information, lead time estimate, and delivery schedules.
How is operations related to finance? Operations provides finance with inventory and production data, capital budgeting and equipment requests, and technology plans. Finance provides the capital resources for financing inventory and securing capital equipment.
How is operations related to Human Resources? Operations relies on human resources to meet its personnel needs (hiring, training, and evaluating workers)

what is craft production and mass production? handcrafting products & high volume production of standardized product
Describe crashing a project. You crash projects to meet a required deadline or to stay on a schedule. The process is to come up with a critical path and completion time, determine if this is appropriate and then see if there is any slack. determine inexpensive crashing
What is a critical path? cthe critical path is the longest path through the network which determines project completion time. It's important to project planning in that it determines the subset of activities on the critical path and where there are troubles in these activities
How are lean production and quality management related? Quality management recognizes that some activities can be done in parallel and figures length of time requires to complete activities which is similar to lean production because both are trying to eliminate waste and become more efficient in production
What role does elimination of waste play in lean production? IN developing a lean system, waste (anything that does not add value to the product) should be removed (to do more with less) that means less inventory, fewer workers, less space etc. anything that can be removed to make the process cheaper and efficient
What is a pull system? material is pulled through the system as its needed according to customer demand. Prevent over and under production and forces cooperation.
What is a push system? Material is pushed through the system according to production schedule
what is project management? management of work to develop and implement an innovation or change in an existing operation. It involves planning, scheduling, and control. Projects are more persistent in companies these days due to the global business environment.
