Algebra Basics
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Closure | Performing a certain operation on elements in a set will produce another element in the set |
Rational Number | A number that can be expressed as a ratio of two integers |
Irrational Number | A number whose decimal is nonterminating and nonrepeating |
Set | A finite or infinite group of elements |
Element | A number or variable included in a set |
Axiom | A mathematical statement accepted as true |
Expression | A mathematical statement comprising one or more mathematical terms |
Term | A variable, a coefficient, or the product of a coefficient and one or more variables (generally separated by addition or subtraction) |
Variable | A symbol that represents an unknown value |
Coefficient | The number multiplied by a variable |
Factor | A number, variable, or term that is multiplied by another number, variable, or term |
Quantity | An expression enclosed with parentheses |
Associative Property of Addition | Addition can be performed in any order regardless of how numbers are grouped (within parentheses) and the sum will still remain the same |
Associative Property of Multiplication | Multiplication can be performed in any order regardless of how numbers are grouped (within parentheses) and the product will still remain the same |
Commutative Property of Addition | Addition can be performed in any order and the sum will remain the same |
Commutative Property of Multiplication | Multiplication can be performed in any order and the product will still remain the same |
