Ecology Quiz #2

TermDefinition
Food web Describes how energy flows between organisms throughout an entire ecosystem.
Food chain Describes how energy flows from one specific organism to another in an ecosystem.
Habitat Where an organism lives. Provides shelter. Access to food and water. A place to hide from predators. A safe place for offspring to live. Different organisms are adapted to living in different environments.
Niche An organism’s role or function in an ecosystem. How an organism “makes a living.” Way(s) in which an organism contributes to the functioning of the ecosystem as a whole.
Consumers Get their food from other organisms (by eating them) Break down food through cellular respiration Can be herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores Ex: All animals, some protist
Decomposers Break down dead organisms Release carbon back into the atmosphere Allow nutrients and minerals to be recycled Ex: Bacteria, Fung
Producers Make their own food through photosynthesis Break down that food through cellular respiration Ex: All plants, some protists and some bacteria
Species Organisms that are similar enough to breed sucessfully. “Breed successfully”: to produce offspring that can also reproduce. A horse and a donkey are not the same species, and can reproduce The offspring is a mule - mules can’t reproduce.
Population All the members of a certain species that live together in the same area. Can interact with each other. Use the same resources Live in the same habitats Fill the same niches Breed and care for offspring
Omnivore Eat everything, producers and consumers.
Carnivore Eats only consumers.
Herbivore Eat only produers.
Primary Consumer Eats producers
Secondary Consumer Eats primary comsumer
