Unit 204 revision

Shampoo and condition : Contraindications

QuestionAnswer
What contra-indications could be identified at consultation ? Cuts and abrasions Infections or infestations Scalp/skin disorders Allergies to products Recent scar tissue or injuries in scalp area
How would you identify Normal hair/scalp Hair is shiny and cuticles are smooth. Scalp will be pinky/white with no dryness or oiliness
How would you identify DRY hair/scalp May be dull as light is absorbed rather than reflected. Cuticles may be slightly raised
Dry hair - likely cause - Damaged - chemically, environmentally or due to heat - Very curly hair is naturally dry as oil cannot travel down hair shaft easily
Recommendations for Dry hair Moisturising shampoo and conditioner. If hair is fine be careful not to overload hair with too much product as that would weigh down the hair
Another word for oily hair Seborrhoea
How to identify Seborrhoea Hair is wet looking at root area and slightly along hair shaft. Oily hair can also 'clump' together rather than lie as single hairs
Seborrhoea -Likely cause hair is due to be shampooed - hair and scalp insufficiently cleansed - sweating - overactive sebaceous glands - diet
Recommendations for Seborrhoea Use shampoo for oily hair and surface conditioner on ends and mid-lengths Treatment for mid-length and ends and leave in scalp treatment to aid seborrhoea control Advise client that eating healthy reduces oily hair
How to identify Pityriasis capitis Yellow flakes due to fungi or yeast or dry and white flakes
Likely cause of Pityriasis capitis Fungi, yeast or stress
Recommendations for Pityriasis capitis Refer to GP if fungal. If stress related, caused by overproduction of skin cells, use medicated shampoo. Use condition specific scalp treatment to aid dandruff control
How to identify a Sensitive scalp May be whiter than normal and have white flakes close to the scalp or appear pink/red and be tender to touch
Likely cause of a Sensitive scalp Allergies, chemicals, sunburn, infection or infestation, hair extensions
Recommendation for Sensitive scalp Use products for sensitive scalp and avoid heavily perfumed shampoos and conditioners
Impact of product allergies on services Ask if client has experienced any previous allergies with products or if they have nut or aloe Vera allergy as these can be in products. Check ingredients before use if client has any allergies
Impact of recent scar tissue on services Check scar has healed. Use gentle massage movements around scar tissue area
Impact of cuts and abrasions on services If cut is open, don't carry out service. If sore use gentle massage movements. Avoid treatments containing alcohol as may sting
What should you do when client tells you a contra-indication What should you do when client tells you a contra-indication
