Module 10 - The Middle Ages

What were the three main changes in life after the Germanic invasions? Disruption of Trade, Downfall of Cities, and Population Shifts.
What were the two groups of people that could still read and write after the invasions? Priests and other church officials.
What are two examples of languages that evolved from Latin? French and Spanish.
What were two nicknames that the son of Pepin, Charles, was given? Charlemagne and Charles the Great.
In what season did Charlemagne lead his armies against enemies that surrounded his kingdom? Summer.
In what year did all three of Charlemagne's sons fight over the control of the Empire and sign the Treaty of Verdun? 843 AD.
What group of people were given the nicknames Northmen or Norsemen? The Vikings.
What did Magyars do instead of conquering land in their attacks on Europe? They took captives to sell as slaves.
Define feudalism. The system of governing and landholding.
Define knights. Mounted horsemen who pledged to defend their lord's lands in exchange for fiefs.
What were the vast majority of people in Europe in the Middle Ages? Peasants.
What were the three things a lord provided his serfs? Housing, farmland, and protection from bandits.
Around how many families lived in the village on a manor? Fifteen to thirty families.
What type of warrior became the most important in armies? Mounted Knights.
Define chivalry. A complex set of ideals, demanded that a knight fight bravely in defense of three masters.
What three masters did knights have to answer to? His lord, his God, and his chosen lady.
At the age of 7, what role were young knights? 14? 21? They were a page, then a squire, then finally a knight.
How did young knights gain experience? They gained experience by fighting in local wars and tournaments.
What were a couple heroes that were in many epics? King Arthur and Charlemagne.
Who played important roles in the lives of both noble and peasant families? Women.
