Term | Definition |

Industrial Relations | The relations between the management of a firm and its employees and how they co-operate and communicate with each other. |
Trade Union | An organisation representing employee’s in a particular trade or profession. |
Shop Steward | A spokes person elected by employees as their official union representative in the workplace. |
Irish Congress of Trade Unions | An Interest Group representing trade unions in Ireland. |
Official strike | Union seeks the approval of members by secret ballot. Dispute must be confirmed by ICTU. A minimum of one weeks notice must be given. |
Sympathetic Strike | A group of workers not involved in the dispute go on strike to show their support for the disputing workers. |
Work-to-Rule | Employees carry out their work following all rules to the letter. They do their basic job and nothing else. |
Token stoppage | Workers strike for a brief period to highligh greivances ex Teachers one-day stoppage Feb 2020 |
Overtime Ban | Workers refuse to do any overtime. This is especially effective way to put pressure on the employer when the business is very busy. |
unofficial strike | This is when workers go on strike without having a secret vote and/or without giving their employers a weeks notice. |
wildcat/lightning strike | unofficial non-union quick strike. ex beef farmers blockade of meat processing plants 2020 |
Political Strike | Workers protest against the government by stopping work. |
Negotiation | A dialogue between two or more parties to reach a beneficial outcome over issues where a conflict exists |
Conciliation | When a neutral 3rd party encourages both sides to meet and talk out their problems. |
Mediation | When a neutral 3rd party acts as a go-between to the parties in a dispute. |
Arbitration | When a neutral 3rd party is asked to investigate the dispute and make a ruling |
Industrial Relations Act 1990 | Legislation that sets the ground rules for industrial relations disputes |
Secret ballot | a sectret vote of union members whether to go on strike, to protect them from retribution from colleagues or management |
Picketing | Employees walk outside the workplace carrying banners, informing the public that a strike is on. |
Secondary picketing | the picketing of another business who does business with the employer with whom a union has a dispute. |
Closed Shop | Where workers have only one choice of union to join. The management will speak only to that union. |
Trade Union Immunity | An employer cannot sue a trade union and its members for losses suffered as a result of a strike. |
Trade dispute | Any dispute between employers and workers connected with the terms or conditions of employment of any person” |
Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) | Promotes good industrial relations practice and helps solve industrial disputes. |
Labour Court | Investigates disputes that could not be resolved by the WRC |
Joint Labour Committees (JLCs) | Representatives of employers and workers in a particular industry sector |
Codes of Practice | A collection of accepted rules and procedures to be followed when dealing with conflict prepared by an employer with the guidance of the LRC. |
Employment Regulation Orders (EROs) | sets minimum pay and work conditions in specific industries by JLCs. Used in sectors where workers are vulnerable or under represented by unions |
Unfair Dismissal Acts 1977-2015 | The Act operates on the principle that a dismissal is deemed to be unfair until proved otherwise. |
redundancy | being no longer in employment because there is no more work available. |
incompetence | lack of ability to do something successfully or as it should be done |
Reinstatement | The employee is given his old job back with exactly the same pay and conditions. He is entitled to full back pay from the date he was unfairly sacked. |
Re-engagement | The employee is given her job back in a similar position. She is not entitled to back pay form the date she was sacked. |
Compensation | The employee is paid an amount of money by her former employer as compensation for the financial loss she suffered as a result of the unfair dismissal up to maximum of 2 years. |
Constructive Dismissal | Where the employer makes the working conditions for an employee so intolerable |
Employment Equality Acts 1998-2015 | Prohibits discrimination in the workplace. Covers temp, part-time and full-time work on equal pay, training and promotion |
The 9 Grounds of Discrimination | Age, Gender, Disability, Sexual Orientation, Traveller, Family status, Civil status, Race or Religion |
Harassment | Conduct which is offensive, humiliating or intimidating, acts of physical intimacy, spoken words, or pictures. |
legislative conflict resolution | Using legal procedures to find solutions to industrial relations disputes. |
non-legislative conflict resolution | Finding solutions to industrial relatioons conflict without using legal channels. ex. negotiation |
Collective Bargaining | A process of negotiations between employers and a group of employees. Employees are represented by a trade union to which they belong. |
National Agreements | far-reaching labour agreements negotiated between the Social Partners at a national level. |
entrepreneur | a person who takes the initiative and risk with setting up a new business idea. they bring together the four factors of production: land |
social enterprise | a not-for-profit organisation that has a social or environmental aim. profits go to the cause not owners |
