Music Theatre Terms

TermDefinition
Aria A piece for a solo voice that is usually accompanied by an orchestra. In an opera, an aria is usually referred to as when the character is thinking about their own emotions. Most arias are lyrical, and some include musical repetition.
Recitative A rhythmically free vocal style (that's like the natural talking) that is used for dialogue and narrative in operas.
Libretto The story (or book) of a musical usually containing all of the spoken words and stage directions (the script).
Lyrics The words to a song.
Patter Song A song sung by a comic character that features a fast and simple tune with lots of words.
Parody Song A well known song with the original lyrics replaced by new lyrics.
Jukebox Musical Modern type of musical featuring songs of a pop or rock group or soloists artists. Might have story to it or reused type style. Ex: Mamamia, Dream Girls.
Rock Opera A form of musical theater in which all of the words are sung to rock and roll styles of music. Ex: Hamilton, Rent.
Book Musical A musical which tells a definite story, with spoken words, songs, and orchestra. Ex: Mary Poppins.
Ziegfeld Follies A variety show on a grand scale. Features large, expensive scenery. Lavishishy costumed chorus girls; songs, dances, and comedy acts. Ex: I love Lucy
Musical Comedy A Book Musical (some type of plot) with a comic plot (rather than serious plot). Ex: Usually any type of Broadway that is out there right now.
Operetta (Also known as light opera) A European style of musical theater which blends singing and orchestral styles of Grand Opera with elements of musical comedy.
Opera Comique An ancestor of the Operetta featuring the vocal and orchestra styles of grand opera but with a comic plot. Ex: The Marriage of Figiro; can be dark or light plot. Usually 2-3 acts.
Ballad Opera A British ancestor of the American Mucical which features popular tunes with new lyrics. Ex: The Begger’s Opera
Singspiel A German form of musical theater. Popular in the 18th century. Ex: The Magic Flute by Mozart
Olio Show Type of variety show that is usually accompanying a melodrama play.
Opera Type of musical play in which all the words are sung and accompianied by an orchestra. 2 types: Aria and Recitative.
Liturgical Drama Biblical scene acted out and sung with musical accompaniment as part of a religious service. Ex: Christmas Contatas, Easter Pagent, Christmas Pagent; has singing, drama, acting, part of religious service.
Vaudeville A variety show featuring a wide range of acts and these can range from song, dances, comedy sketches, jugglers, magicians, and animal acts; all intended for family audience.
