NF Text Features 4-5

Nonfiction text features set for 4th & 5th grade.

TermDefinition
italic print a text that appears slanted to the right, used to call attention to words , phrases, or titles
bold print words that stand out from the others because they are darker or thicker
bullets used to make lists easier to read
parentheses marks used in a sentence to show additional information related to a word or phrase in the sentence ( )
caption words near a picture that tells something important about the picture
subheading like a heading, but smaller. Helps to chunk the text into smaller parts or supporting details
colored print words in a color that is different than the other words around it, makes these words stand out
diagram a drawing that shows the parts of something or how something works
timeline a type of image that shows events in the order in which they happened, usually historical events
fact box words inside a box or other shape that give more information about a topic
glossary a small dictionary, found in the back of a nonfiction book, telling what some words in the book mean
heading large print found before a paragraph or section, tells the reader what the section is about
index alphabetical list of important topics in the book, showing on which page to find them
title what the book is called
table of a list of all the chapters or sections in the book and the page number where it starts
photograph/photo a picture made with a camera, showing something real
illustration a drawing made by and artist that helps the reader visualize (or see in the mind) what is being read
map a photo or illustration showing where places are in the world
graph a type of picture that shows a set of numbers and organizes the numbers so that they are easier to understand
