Vocabulary terms from our unit on the French Revolution

absolute monarch | a king or queen who has unchecked authority to do whatever they want without restrictions |

"Divine right of kings" | the belief that kings and queens have a god-given right to rule |
tyrannical | characteristic of a tyrant, cruel, or unjust |
treasury | a place where the money and other riches of a government are kept |
regime | a period of rule |
parish priest | a person in a local church who leads the congregation |
tithe | one-tenth of a person's income, paid to support a church |
Third Estate | 97% of the French population; everyone who was not royalty, nobility, or clergy |
feudal | relating to the medieval system of exchanging land for service and loyalty |
Bourgeois | wealthy members of French society, part of the Third Estate. |
peasant | a poor farmer who owns or rents a small piece of land for cultivation |
clergy | all people ordained for religious duties in the church (First estate) |
famine | extreme shortage of food, starvation |
proletariat | workers, or working class of citizens |
reign | to rule over a country, as a king, etc |
courtier | a person who serves as a friend or adviser to a ruler in his or her court |
royal | having the status of a king or queen or a member of their family |
dauphin | the title given to the prince who is next in line to inherit the French throne |
foreign ambassador | a person from another country who is an official representative of their government |
interest | the money paid by a borrower for the use of some else's money |
Estates-General | an assembly made up of representatives from France's three estates |
delegation | a group of people chosen to speak on behalf of a larger group |
National Assembly | the elected legislative body in France during the FR Revolution |
Tennis Court Oath | the promise made on June 20, 1789 by the NA to "not separate and to reassemble wherever necessary until the Constitution of the kingdom is established." |
finance minister | the government official in charge of a country’s money |
natural law | a system of rights or justice that is shared by all people and that comes from nature, not the rules of society. |
citizens' militia | an army composed of the people of a nation rather than soldiers |
constitutional monarchy | government by a king or queen whose power is limited by a constitution |
legislative assembly | a group of representatives with the power to make laws for the country |
republic | a government in which people elect representatives to rule for them |
guillotine | a machine designed to behead people quickly and with little pain |
corruption | dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power |
Jacobin | a member of a violent, extreme left-wing group during the French Revolution |
royalist | a supporter of the king or queen |
traitor | a person who is disloyal, a person who betrays their country |
famine | an extreme shortage of food that results in widespread hunger |
coronation | the ceremony or act of crowning a ruler |
national bank | a government bank that issues and manages a countries money |
exile | to force someone to live outside of a place as a punishment |
