What is the mandate of heaven? | The belief that heaven gave rulers the right to rule. If they became corrupt and mean rulers, the people had the right from heaven to overthrow them and put in a new ruler. |
In order to keep the mandate of heaven, what did rulers have to do? | Be kind and generous rulers and make sure to look out for their people by helping them in any way they can. |

What were most people in the Zhou Dynasty? | They were poor farmers. |
What did society demand of family? | Society demanded that individuals show respect to their family. Older family members had more power than younger ones and men typically had more power than women. |

What was iron used for? | To create stronger weapons and farming tools. |
What did the Zhou build to increase trade? | They built networks of roads throughout the empire that helped people travel and trade. |
What type of occupations were the Zhou very interested in? | Poets and artists because they were creative and thought differently. |
What did the Qin do to make their empire stronger? | Brought in advisers from other kingdoms to help rule the empire. |
What is legalism? | A philosophy that a strong leader and legal system are needed to keep society in order and people well-behaved. |
How did Qin emperors rule? | With direct force, increasing taxes and requiring heavy labor from all people to build huge projects and buildings. |
What did the Qin begin building during their dynasty to protect from invaders in the North? | The Great Wall of China - it was 20 feet tall and spanned over 6000 miles long |
How did the Qin force people to act good? | They would torture and heavily punish people that committed crime or disobeyed the emperor. Many were executed by beheading or buried alive. People didn’t like him and a great rebellion overthrew his empire. |
Who was Shang Huangdi? | The first emperor of the Qin Dynasty who tried to monitor and ban Chinese thought. For example, he burned books that had beliefs he didn’t like and punished those that held beliefs he was against! |
Why did the Qin Dynasty come to an end? | Shi Huangdi was too harsh of an emperor with mean and unfair laws and brutal punishment. |
Who was the first emperor of the Han Dynasty? | Liu Bang - he claimed the last Qin Dynasty lost power because the emperor was too harsh and mean. Liu Bang believed in Confucian practices that a ruler must treat his people with kindness and be wise and inspiring to his people. |
What was the road that connected China to the West? | The Silk Road - It allowed China to trade its valuable Silk to other civilizations and get wealthy off of trade and travel. The Silk road spanned over 4000 miles long. |
What was the Civil Service? | A system of government where the Han selected employees for government based on strict and difficult tests that people had to take. Many studied their whole early life to prepare for the test so they could get a government job. |
What group of people were highly respected in the Han Dynasty? | Farmers, they made up 90% of the population. |
What three industries were important in China and allowed them to become rich from trade? | Iron used to make weapons and armor, silk for clothing, and salt to preserve food and keep it from going bad. |
What were the social classes in the Han Dynasty? | At the top - Emperor Upper class - Teachers, professors, scholars Middle class - Farmers Lower class - Slaves |
What were the Han Dynasty’s beliefs about family? | Loyalty to family and respect to elders was very important. Children could be punished by both their family and the government for misbehaving or disobeying their parents and elders. |
Who was Ban Zhao? | She was one of few women in the Han Dynasty that received a good education and advocated that women deserve the same right to an education as men. |
