assets | Game assets include everything that can go into a game, including 3D models, sprites, sound effects, music, code snippets and modules, and even complete projects that can be used by a game engine. |
console | Console games receive commands from the player through the use of an input device, commonly called a controller. |
cut scene | A cutscene or event scene (sometimes in-game cinematic or in-game movie) is a sequence in a video game that is not interactive, breaking up the gameplay. |
esa | The Entertainment Software Association ( ESA) is the trade association of the video game industry in the United States |
esrb rating | ESRB ratings provide information about what’s in a video game or app so parents can make informed choices about which are right for their family. |
events | a series of games or contests that make up a single unit of competition (as on a professional golf tour), the championship playoffs of a league or conference, or an invitational event |
first person shooter | A first person shooter (FPS) is a genre of action video game that is played from the point of view of the protagonist. FPS games typically map the gamer's movements and provide a view of what an actual person would see and do in the game |
fps | our framerate, measured in frames per second (fps), describes how smoothly a given game runs on your PC. |
game screens | In arcade games, the title screen is shown as part of the attract mode loop, usually after a game demonstration is played |
genre | Definition of Game Genre: Refers to a particular type or style of a game. |
gml | This section of the manual is a reference guide for the GameMaker Studio 2Language (GML). |
gone gold | When a game goes gold, usually that means it is ready for distribution. |
grind | Grinding refers to the playing time spent doing repetitive tasks within a game to unlock a particular game item or to build the experience needed to progress smoothly through the game |
janky | Janky is a uncommon word in technology, gaming circles, and media, too. When a new app, device, game, or movie premieres and doesn’t live up to high-performing expectations, critics use janky as a synonym for glitchy or buggy to describe it. |
loot | In video games, loot describes valuable items picked up by the player character over the course of the game, such as in-game currency, spells, equipment and weapons. |
mmo | MMO means massively multiplayer online, which refers to online multiplayer games where thousands of players can play at one time. Some MMO games include "DC Universe Online," "World of Tanks," and "Call of Duty.". |

strategy | A strategy game or strategic game is a game (e.g. video or board game) in which the players' uncoerced, and often autonomous decision-making skills have a high significance in determining the outcome |
top down | Any game that offers an elevated viewpoint above the action can be considered to have a top-down or overhead perspective. This can include games with Isometric graphics, dual-joystick shooters, and 3D platformers. |
