What is characterization? The process by which the author reveals the personality of the characters in a story.
What are the two types of characterization? direct characterization and indirect characterization
What is direct characterization? when the author tells the audience what the personality of the characters is
What is indirect characterization? when the author shows what the characters are like
What does STEAL mean? The five methods of direction characterization: speech, thoughts, effect on other characters, actions and looks
What is speech? what the characters SAY
What are actions? what the characters DO
What is "effect on others"? the way a character affects the other characters' actions and feelings
What are looks? the way a character looks--hair color, size, body build
Greek theater involved ritual, competition, subsidized or paid for by the state, choral
Why did characters wear masks? it was a sin to pretend to be someone else, so wearing a mask showed the characters were not really who they represented
What information did masks give the audience? gender, ethnicity, class
What did the color of the masks do? Certain colors revealed the characters occupation or status.
Why were the actors all men? Women were considered "inferior" and it was not appropriate for them to take part in dramas.
What is one disadvantage of wearing a mask? harder to understand, so the actors had to project their voices loudly
Who are the main characters in the Greek drama, MEDEA? Jason and Medea
