Postpartum

TermDefinition
Afterpains cramp-like pain in the abd following birth cause by contractions of uterus as it returns to normal size
Atony lack of normal muscle tone or tension
Engorgement Lymph and venous stasis occurring in the breast prior to the flow of milk
Homan's sign Pain in the calf or dorsiflexion of the foot; indicator of thrombosis
Involution return of the reproductive organs to the nonpregnant state when pregnancy is over
"Let Down" reflex a new mother's body's response to oxytocin that allows the milk in the breast alveoli to flow into the milk ducts
Lochia The vaginal discharge during the puerperium, consisting of blood, mucus, and tissue
Placenta Accreta placenta abnormally adherent to the uterine wall
Prolactin hormone from the anterior lobe of pituitary gland trhat stimulates lactation
Puerperium period from delivery until the reproductive organs return to there normal condition; 6wks
