What was Aksum? Aksum was an international trading center/power that lasted for 800 years
Where was Aksum located? It was South of Kush on the Red Sea, in modern day Eritrea and Ethiopia
When was the first mention of Aksum? The first mention of the kingdom was in a Greek guidebook.
Why was Aksum an international trading center/power and why? It's location, there was a great access of sea trade with the Mediterranean Sea
What was Adulis? A sea port in Aksum were people from all over went to trade
Who was Ezana and what did he do? He was a great king who expanded the land and made Christianity the main religion
Before Christianity what was the religion of Aksum like? It was a polytheistic religion and they believed in many gods. They honored their dead ancestors and made sacrifices
What was the international language at the time? The international language at the time was Greek
How did Christianity enter Aksum? When people were sharing ideas the idea of a monotheistic religion came, and finally when Ezana became king he converted himself and Aksum to Christianity
How did Aksumites make Christianity their own? The people blended ideas of traditional religious practices on top of the Christian beliefs like dancing
What the longest achievement these people had? There longest achievement was Christianity and the way they made it their own
What was the written language? Ge’ez was the written language, it was the only African kingdom that had a written language
What cultural innovation did they have? They were the first state south of the Sahara to have and mint their own coins
What other achievements did they have and create? They had a hilly environment so a agricultural achievement they had was terraces that helped stop water from getting washed down hills
How long did the kingdom last for? The kingdom of Aksum lasted 800 years before its fall
How did the kingdom fall? The kingdom started to fall due to invaders from the religion Islam
At first what happened between Aksum and Islam? At first Aksum protected Islam and they kept their trading power
What did the invaders do? The invaders took over the sea port of Adulis and took away its trading power and the kingdom starting to decline because of that
Why did Aksum become an isolated Christian settlement? They moved their capital because of the Islam invaders so their new location caused them to be isolated
What legacy did Aksum leave behind? It left its religion, architecture, and agriculture and the pattern of not expanding outside a small area is still found in Africa today
