Plate Boundaries

Plate Boundaries, Earthquakes and Volcanoes

TermDefinition
Volcano a weak spot in the crust where molten material, or magma, comes to the surface.
Magma Found underground: mixture of rock-forming substances, water, and gases from the mantle. (molten)
Lava found at the surface: mixture of rock-forming substances, water, and gases from the mantle. (molten)
A volcano can form along Hot Spots, Mid-Ocean Ridges, Subduction zones and Rift Valleys
Caldera a hole in a collapsed volcano, usually located at the top.
Pyroclastic Flow dense, fast-moving current of hot gas, ash, and matter (also known as a tephra)
Quiet Volcanic Eruption low levels of silica and the lava slowly oozes out
Violent volcanic eruption High levels of silica and the lava blasts out quickly
Fracture breaking of rocks
Deformation bending or folding of rocks
Faults cracks in the crust where MOVEMENT occurs
Compression stress occurs at a _________ boundary Convergent boundary
Shear stress occurs at a _________ boundary Transform boundary
Tension stress occurs at a _________ boundary Divergent boundary
Thrust fault occurs at a ____________ boundary Convergent boundary
Strike-slip fault occurs at a ____________ boundary Transform boundary
Normal fault occurs at a ____________ boundary Divergent boundary
Epicenter the location on the earth’s surface above the spot where earthquake originates
Focus The exact location under the earth’s surface where the plates move releasing seismic waves
Magnitude the measure of the energy released
Surface wave most damaging wave
Primary wave the wave travels through ALL matter
Secondary wave the wave can travel through everything EXCEPT liquids

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
