Term | Definition |

Intake | (noun) The amount of food, drink, etc. that you take into your body. Ex. Reduce your daily intake of salt |
Atone | (verb) To act in a way that shows you are sorry for doing something wrong in the past. Ex. Im atone for copy in the test |
Bankrupt | (adjective) Without enough money to pay what you owe. Ex. They went bankrupt in 2009 |
Avert | (verb) To prevent something bad or dangerous from happening. Ex. A disaster was narrowly averted |
Thwart | (verb) To prevent somebody from doing what they want to do. Ex. The army thwarted the attempt |
Unveil | (verb) To remove a cover or something so that it can be seen in public for the first time. Ex. Mom unveiled a statue on the restaurant opening |
Increasingly | (adverb) More and more all the time. Ex. It is becoming increasingly clear that this problem will not be easily solved. |
Gauge | (noun) An instrument for measuring the amount or level of something. Ex. The car gauge is now on 80. |
Subdue | (verb) To bring somebody/something under control, especially by using force. Ex. Troops were called in to subdue the rebels. |
Overemphasize | (verb) To give too much emphasis or importance to something. Ex. She´s overemphasizing the situation. |
Folded | (verb) To bend something, especially paper or cloth, so that one part lies on top of another part. Ex. He folded the map up and put it in his pocket |
Nonplussed | (adjective) Surprised and confused so that you do not know what to do or say. Ex. When he yelled at her, she got nonplussed. |
Lynch | (verb) If a crowd of people lynch somebody whom they consider guilty of a crime, they capture them, do not allow them to have a trial in court, and kill them illegally, usually by hanging. Ex. The crowd in the movement lynch her. |
Insurance | (noun) An arrangement with a company in which you pay them regular amounts of money and they agree to pay the costs, for example, if you die or are ill, or if you lose or damage something. Ex. We have a car insurance. |
Income | (noun) The money that a person, a region, a country, etc. earns from work, from investing money, from business, etc. Ex. Trying to earn an income as an artist can be hard |
Maturity | (noun) The quality of thinking and behaving in a sensible, adult manner. Ex. He has maturity beyond his years |
Mismatch | (verb) To go together badly or to be not suitable for each other of (things or people). Ex. They made a mismatched couple |
Spec | (noun) A detailed description of something, especially the design and materials needed to produce something. Ex. We want the machine manufactured to our own spec. |
Decipher | (verb) To convert something written in code into normal language. Ex. We should decipher this message |
Haggles | (verb) To argue with somebody in order to reach an agreement, especially about the price of something. Ex. I managed to haggle the price down of the pizza |
Liabilities | (noun) The state of being legally responsible for something. Ex. The company has liabilities to its employees |
Invoice | (noun) A list of goods that have been sold, work that has been done, etc., showing what you must pay. Ex. I have invoice $1200 |
Payroll | (noun) A list of people employed by a company showing the amount of money to be paid to each of them. Ex. We have 500 people on the payroll |
Increase | (verb) To become greater in amount, number, value, etc.; to make something greater in amount, number, value, etc. Ex. The numbers increase 20% last month |
Metrics | (noun) A set of numbers or statistics used for measuring something, especially results that show how well a business, school, computer program, etc. is doing. Ex. Companies are scored on key financial metrics |
Ads | (noun) Notice, picture or film telling people about a product, job or service. Ex. They've produced an ad for a new chocolate bar. |
Rate | (noun) A measurement of the speed at which something happens. Ex. Figures published today show another fall in the rate of inflation. |
Equity | (noun) The value of a company’s shares. Ex. He plans to raise the company’s return on equity to 15% |
Figs | (noun) A soft sweet fruit that is full of small seeds and often eaten dried. Ex. A fig tree it's over there. |
Amount | (noun) A quantity of something. Ex. I was amazed at the amount he could eat |
Hike | (noun) A long walk in the country. Ex. They went on a ten-mile hike through the forest |
Draft | (noun) A rough written version of something that is not yet in its final form. Ex This is only the first draft of my speech |
Advertising | (noun) The activity and industry of advertising things to people on television, in newspapers, on the internet, etc. Ex. The company's print and digital advertising |
Revenue | (noun) The money that a government receives from taxes or that an organization, etc. receives from its business. Ex. Advertising revenue finances the commercial television channels |
Fad | (noun) Something that people are interested in for only a short period of time. Ex. A fad of artistics activities |
Showcase | (verb) To present somebody's abilities or the good qualities of something in an attractive way. Ex. Jack found a film role that showcased all his talents |
Advertorial | (noun) An advertisement that is designed to look like an article in the newspaper or magazine in which it appears. Ex. The advertorial says that we are a good team |
Shareholder | (noun) An owner of shares in a company or business. Ex. The shareholder will be here next month |
Stock Exchange | (noun) A place where shares in companies are bought and sold; all of the business activity involved in doing this. Ex. We have an appointment at the London Stock Exchange |
Fixed assets | (noun) Land, buildings and equipment that are owned and used by a company. Ex. We have to check our fixed assets again |
Purchase | (verb) To buy something. Ex. Please ensure that you purchase your ticket in advance. |
Taxpayer | (noun) A person who pays tax to the government, especially on the money that they earn. Ex. Hundreds of thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money have been spent on the project |
Quotation | (noun) A group of words or a short piece of writing taken from a book, play, speech, etc. and repeated because it is interesting or useful. Ex. I'll check the book quotation again |
Mortgage | (noun) A legal agreement by which a bank or similar organization lends you money to buy a house. Ex. He raised the money by taking out a second mortgage on his house |
Trademark | (noun) A name, symbol or design that a company uses for its products and that cannot be used by anyone else. Ex. ‘Big Mac’ is McDonald's best-known trademark. |
Lender | (noun) A person or an organization that lends money. Ex. The bank is the largest mortgage lender in the country |
Budget | (noun) The money that is available to a person or an organization and a plan of how it will be spent over a period of time. Ex. Many families struggle to balance the household budget |
Fees | (noun) An amount of money that you pay for professional advice or services. Ex. The school fees are expected to rise again next year |
Assets | (noun) A person or thing that is valuable or useful to somebody/something. Ex. Being able to speak a foreign language is a major asset |
Flood | (noun) A large amount of water covering an area that is usually dry. Ex. The heavy rain has caused floods in many parts of the country |
