Formal Letters
Layout of a Formal Letter
Question | Answer |

1. A formal letter begins with | the sender's address on the top right |
2. Below the address | is the date |
3. Below the date | is the Recipient's name and address on the left-hand side |
4. Below the recipient's address | is the opening salutation |
5. Below the opening salutation | is the stated purpose of the letter |
6. Below the stated purpose of the letter | is the additional information, called the body of the letter |
7. At the end of the letter | is the request 'I look forward to hearing from you... Please do not hesitate to contact me at the above address.' |
8. The sign off at the end | is 'Yours sincerely' - if you know the recipient's name or 'Yours faithfully' - if you DON'T know the recipient's name |
9. The last thing in a formal letter | is your signature |
Informal/chatty language is used | in Personal letters |
Formal language is used | in Formal letters |
In Personal letters you know | the recipient well |
With Formal letters | you don't know the recipient well |
Formal letters include the recipient's address | Personal letters do not include the recipient's address |
Senders address appears on the right-hand side in Personal letters | Sender's name and address appears on the right-hand side in Formal letters |
Personal letters may contain a postscript (P.S.) | Formal letters DO NOT contain a postscript (P.S.) |
