Math Final Exam - Words to Know
Term | Definition |
---|---|
proportion | a statement that two ratios are equal; cross-multiplication can be used to determine if ratios are proportional |
evaluate | to solve an algebraic expression when a value is given for a variable |
area | the measure of the surface of a polygon; a two-dimensional measurement; units squared |
right angle | an angle that measures exactly 90 degrees |
opposites | integers that are the same distance away from zero on a number line, but in opposite directions |
inequality signs | less than, greater than, less than or equal to, and greater than or equal to |
tax and tip | usually found by finding the percent of a number, and adding that amount to the original number |
discount | usually found by finding the percent of a number, and subtracting that amount from the original number |
quadrant | one of four regions into which x- and y- axes divide the coordinate plane |
integers | the counting numbers, their opposites, and zero |
percent | a ratio that compares a number to one hundred; parts of the word translate to out of 100 |
distributive property | multiplying a number by a sum or difference gives the same result as multiplying that number by each term in the sum or difference and then adding or subtracting the corresponding products; for ex: a (b+c) = (a x b) + (a x c) |
absolute value | the distance between the number and zero on the number line; the way it is written is |a|, for ex: |7| = 7 and |-7| = 7 |
volume | a number of cubic units needed to fill a solid figure; how much space an object takes up in three dimensions; for a rectangular prism, the formula is V = l x w x h. |
order of operations | the sequence in which mathematic operations should be performed in an expression; it is often abbreviated with PEMDAS, BEMDAS, or GEMDAS, P=parentheses/B= brackets/G=grouping, E=exponents, M=mult, D=division, A=add, S=subtract |
rate | a ratio involving two quantities measured in different units, for ex: dollars per hour, miles per minute |
coordinate pair | a point named on a coordinate plane, represented by (x,y); the x value represents how far to move horizontally from the origin, and the y represents how far to move vertically |
intersect | two or more things that pass or lie across one another, for example, the x and y axis do this at (0,0) also called the origin |
table | chart |
simplest form | the numerator and denominator of a fraction have no common factors other than 1 |
rounding to the nearest _____ | alter (a number) to a less exact number, but it is more convenient for calculations or to list, for ex: 12.356 rounded to the nearest tenth is 12.4 |
reciprocal | a fraction flipped, helpful in dividing with fractions, for ex: 7 --> 1/7 and 4/5 --> 5/4 |
graph | points plotted along a pair of axes at right angles |
