Term | Definition |

Amendment 1 (I) | Guarantees citizens the right to freedom of speech, press, religion, peaceful assembly, and petition the government |
Amendment 2 (II) | Right to bear arms (legally own weapons to protect ourselves and our property) |
Amendment 3 (III) | Protects against quartering of soldiers - Soldiers can't be housed in civilian homes during peacetime without the owner's consent |
Amendment 4 (IV) | Protection of privacy; Protects against unlawful searches and seizures of property without probable cause or a search warrant |
Amendment 5 (V) | Right to have our case approved by a grand jury of our peers; Protection against self- incrimination, double jeopardy, being denied life, liberty, or property without due process of law, and eminent domain |
Amendment 6 (VI) | Guarantees rights to people when they're accused of a crime - Having a speedy and public trial by jury; being tried in the state where the crime was committed; being informed of charges against the accused; having witnesses; having a right to a lawyer |
Amendment 7 (VII) | Preserves the right to a trial by jury in civil (non-criminal) court cases where the value exceeds $20 |
Amendment 8 (VIII) | Protects against excessive bail, fines, or other cruel and unusual punishment |
Amendment 9 (IX) | Right of individuals to be entitled to other rights and freedoms beyond what is listed in the US Constitution (i.e., right to own a house) |
Amendment 10 (X) | Provides that powers not granted to the Federal (or national) government are reserved for the states |
Amendment 13 (XIII) | Abolished (eliminated) slavery |
Amendment 14 (XIV) | Requires that states give all people equal protection under the law; gave citizenship to freed slaves (Equal Protection Clause) |
Amendment 15 (XV) | Voting rights cannot be denied to any citizen based on race, color, or former status as a slave (granted blacks right to vote) |
Amendment 17 (XVII) | Gives people the right to vote for and elect senators directly (before this, senators were elected by state legislatures) |
Amendment 18 (XVIII) | Prohibits the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors |
Amendment 19 (XIX) | Prohibits the federal government and states from forbidding any citizen the right to vote based on sex (granted women right to vote) |
Amendment 20 (XX) - Also known as the Lame Duck Amendment | Sets the inauguration date for new presidential terms and date for new sessions of Congress. It was designed to remove the long period of time a defeated president or member of Congress would continue to serve after his or her failed bid for reelection |
Amendment 21 (XXI) | Repealed the 18th Amendment, bringing an end to the prohibition of alcohol in America |
Amendment 22 (XXII) | Limits Presidents to 2 terms - No person can be elected president more than twice |
Amendment 24 (XXIV) | Made poll taxes illegal |
Amendment 25 (XXV) | Outlines presidential succession (who should take over the president's position) in the event the president is unable to serve or dies in office |
Amendment 26 (XXVI) | Lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 |
Due Process | Part of the 5th amendment, which provides fair treatment/protection to citizens against arbitrary taking of life, liberty, property |
Eminent Domain | Part of the 5th amendment, which prohibits the government from expropriating (taking away) a person's private property for public use without offering just compensation |
Double Jeopardy | Part of the 5th amendment, which protects a person from being prosecuted twice for the same offense |
Self-Incrimination | Part of the 5th amendment, which protects a person from being forced to testify against himself or herself or reveal any information that could be used against them in a court of law |

Bill of Rights | The first ten amendments to the US Constitution, ratified in 1791, which provides specific freedoms to citizens and limits the power of the government |
