TERMDEFINITION
ACCOMMODATION the change that occurs in the ocular lens when it focuses at various distances
ACOUSTIC NERVE the cranial nerve that controls the senses of hearing and equilibrium and that eventually leads to the cerebellum and the medulla
AQUEOUS HUMOR the fluid found in the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye
AUDITORY CANAL a 1-inch segment of tube that runs from the external ear to the middle ear
AUDITORY OSSICLES the set of three small, bony structures in the ear (i.e., the malleus, incus, and stapes)
CATARACT loss of transparency of the lens of the eye
CONES photoreceptors responsible for color (daylight vision)
CORNEA the transparent tissue covering the anterior portion of the eye
CYCLOPLEGIA paralysis of the ciliary muscle in the eye
EUSTACHIAN TUBE a tubular structure in the middle ear that runs to the nasopharynx (throat)
LABYRINTH a bony maze composed of the vestibile, cochlea, and semicircular canals of the inner ear
MIOSIS contraction of the pupil
MYDRIASIS dilation of the pupil
MYOPIA nearsightedness
OPHTHALMIC pertaining to the eye
OTIC pertaining to the ear
RODS photoreceptors responsible for black and white colors (night vision) that respond to dim light
TYMPANIC MEMBRANE a membranous skin that separates the external ear from the middle ear
