Elements of Music

HU240 Unit 6

TermDefinition
Form The order and arrangement of the parts of the music
Harmony The sound of two or more notes are heard simultaneously. When housed within a chord, the ear brings them together in the same way the eye perceives movement in a motion picture rather than only seeing one picture at a time.
Melody The aesthetic product of a given succession of pitches in musical time. The melody implies rhythmically ordered movement from pitch to pitch
Pitch A perceptual property of sounds that makes it possible to judge sounds as "higher" and "lower" in the sense associated with musical melodies
Rhythm The basic, repetitive pulse of the music, or a rhythmic pattern that is repeated throughout the music
Texture Determines how the tempo, melodic, and harmonic materials are combined in a musical composition determining the overall quality of the sound in a piece
Timbre The perceived sound quality of a musical note, sound or tone
Tonality The principle of organizing musical compositions around a central note, the tonic. Generally, any Western or non-Western music periodically returning to a central, or focal, tone exhibits tonality
Volume Determines how loud or how soft the music is
Music Vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.
