Ordered government local governments divided into units and ruled by officers according to law
Limited government citizens have basic rights and there are limits on government power.
Representative government government should serve the will of the people and people should have a say in what the government can or can’t do.
The Magna Cartya signed by King John in 1215. Created by English barons to put limits on the once absolute power of the king. Guarantees certain fundamental right for the privileged such as trial by jury and due process of the law.
The Petition of Right signed by King Charles the first on 1628. Kept the king from declaring military rule, required parliament consent for taxation and pushed from due process. Extension of the magna Cartya.
English Bill of Rights Promised the right of fair trial and needs parliamentary consent for suspension of laws and taxation. In 1689 drawn up by the parliament to prevent abuse of power by future monarchs.
Royal colonies are run by the king, and he chooses the governor. The governor approves all laws.
Charter colonies held the most power and freedom but were run like an oligarchy cus only people with enough property could vote. There are 2 houses, and they could pass laws without the king’s approval. Judges were appointed by the legislature.
Proprietary colonies are run by a proprietor chosen by the king. The proprietor appoints the governor. They are very similar to the royal colony.
