Vocabulary and know-how for 7th grade math.

TermDefinition
Sum The answer to an addition problem.
Difference The answer to a subtraction problem.
Product The answer to a multiplication problem.
Quotient The answer to a division problem.
Natural Numbers The counting numbers. 1,2,3...
Whole Numbers The counting numbers, and 0. 0,1,2,3...
Integers Whole numbers and their opposites. ...-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3...
Rational Numbers Any number that can be written as a fraction, where the denominator does not equal 0. 3/4, 0.45, 0.33333...
Irrational Numbers Any number that cannot be written as a fraction. The decimal does not repeat or terminate. pi, 0.734564827... , the square root of an imperfect square.
Exponent The number that tells the base how many times to multiply by itself.
Diameter The distance from one outer part of a circle to another, while passing through the center.
Radius The distance from the outside to the middle of a circle.
Circumference The distance around a circle.
Area How many square units are inside of a polygon.
Perimeter The distance around a polygon.
Percentage A ratio of a number to 100.
Ratio A comparison of two quantities by division.
Proportion A statement that shows a ratio equals another ratio.
Rate The ratio of one unit to a different unit.
Order of Operations The way of simplifying expressions correctly. PEMDAS
Bar Graph This graph compares different categories to another.
Line Graph This graph shows change over a certain period of time.
Circle Graph A graph that shows what percent is taken by a certain category.
Histogram This graph shows the frequency of something using intervals. The bars are connected to one another.
Origin The point (0,0) is referred to as this.
Quadrant I Both x and y are positive values in this quadrant.
Quadrant II x is negative and y is positive in this quadrant.
Quadrant III Both x and y are negative in this quadrant.
Quadrant IV x is positive and y is negative in this quadrant.
x-axis The horizontal axis.
y-axis The vertical axis.
Translation A slide from one point to another on a graph.
Reflection A flip from one point on a graph to another, over an axis.
Complementary Angles Two angles that add up to 90 degrees.
Supplementary Angles Two angles that add up to 180 degrees.
Right Angle A 90 degree angle.
Obtuse Angle An angle that is greater than 90 degrees, but less than 180 degrees.
Acute Angle An angle that is less than 90 degrees, but greater than 0 degrees.
Scalene Triangle A triangle with no equal sides.
Isosceles Triangle A triangle with two equal sides.
Right Triangle A triangle with a 90 degree angle.q

Less Than or Equal to Closed circle, shading to the left represents this inequality.
Greater Than or Equal to Closed circle, shading to the right represents this inequality.
Cross Products Multiplying diagonally to see if two ratios are proportional.
Nearest Tenth When 0.878 is rounded to 0.9; it is rounded to this place value.
Nearest Hundredth When 0.7684 is rounded to 0.77; it is rounded to this place value.
Nearest Thousandth When 0.7684 is rounded to 0.768; it is rounded to this place value.
Nearest Whole When 4.67 is rounded to 5; it is rounded to this place value.
Nearest Ten When 18 is rounded to 20; it is rounded to this place value.
Nearest Hundred When 564 is rounded to 600; it is rounded to this place value.
Prime Number A number greater than 1 with only two factors, itself and 1.
Composite Number A number greater than 1 with more than two whole number factors.
Triangle A polygon with 3 sides.
Quadrilateral A polygon with 4 sides.
Pentagon A polygon with 5 sides.
Hexagon A polygon with 6 sides.
Heptagon A polygon with 7 sides.
Octagon A polygon with 8 sides.
Nonagon A polygon with 9 sides.
Decagon A polygon with 10 sides.
