Computer Hardware and Software

TermDefinition
CPU Central Processing Unit The brain of the computer
Motherboard Every component in the computer is connected to this
Hard Drive Long term memory. It stores instructions for the computer that do not change.
RAM Random Access Memory Short term memory. Data is stored here while the computer is running for quick access.
Input Devices Devices that input information into the computer such as a keyboard, mouse, scanner, and digital camera.
Output devices: Devices that output information from the computer such as a printer and monitor.
Graphic User Interface (GUI) A set of images and icons seen on the desktop used to operate a program. Basic Windows GUI are icons are small pictures that represent files, commands, or windows.
Ports: An interface between the computer and another peripheral device such as a disk drive, mouse, printer, modem, monitor, camera, FLASH drive or keyboard.
Peripherals Devices that plug into a computer and are not housed internally. e.g. Printers, Scanners, Cameras
Resolution Number of pixels (picture elements) in the monitor image.
