| Berlin Wall | wall built to keep East Germans from fleeing to West Germany |
| genocide | killing of a race of people |
| worldwide depression | in the 1930s, the world fell into an economic depression; businesses and banks were closed |
| Soviet Union | first communist country created by Lenin; US enemy during Cold War; had nuclear weapons |
| propaganda | information used to mislead or promote a specific point of view |
| German reunification | the reuniting of East Germany and West Germany to one country |
| Cold War | a period of misunderstanding and distrust between Soviet Union and the US; 1947-1991 |
| World War I | WWI; conflict from 1914-1919; known as the Great War and the war to end all wars |
| World War II | WWII; conflict lasting from 1939-1945 |
| Treaty of Versailles | a peace treaty that ended WWI; blamed Germany and gave the country harsh punishments as a result |
| Holocaust | killing of Jews and other races by Nazis before and during WWII |
